VII.16.1 Pompeii. December 2004. Entrance doorway at west end of porticus.
According to
Fiorelli –
“Un porticato
sostenuto da pilastri e colonne ne costeggia tutto il lato meridionale, che
principia da una casa priva di protiro, la cui porta introduce direttamente
nell’atrio, avente l’impluvio di fabbrica ed il puteale della cisterne fatto a guisa
di piedistallo. A destra della porta evvi la cella dell’ostiario, e sullo
stesso lato due cubicoli, altro trovandosene a sinistra seguito da conclave,
che per due porte immetteva in alcune stanze non scavate, uscenti sull’agger
delle mura, e poi da una gradinata per accedere alle stanze superiori. Stava di
fronte il tablino, avendo il triclinio da un lato e dall’altro una cella non
interamente dissepolta.”
(translation: "A portico supported by pillars and
columns skirts the whole southern side, which begins with a house deprived of
entrance corridor, the door of which introduces directly into the atrium,
having the masonry impluvium and the puteal of the cistern made to look like a
pedestal. To the right of the doorway, there was the porter’s room, and two
cubicula on the same side, with another found on the left followed by a room, which with two doors entered into some rooms
not yet excavated, exiting on the agger of the walls, and then by steps to
access the upper rooms. Facing was the tablinum, having the triclinium on one
side, and on the other, a room not yet entirely unburied.”)

On the left behind the wall would have been the area of the portico and peristyle.
According to Garcia y Garcia, this house was badly hit by the bombing on 13th September 1943.
The bombing totally demolished the atrium, five annexed rooms on the north and east sides, and the portico near the baths.
The impluvium has now totally vanished.
In many ways, the restoration of 1950 has changed and distorted the original plan of the house.
The stairs on the north-west side of the atrium and the portico have vanished.
The baths of the house are now accessible only from no.12.
Near the baths was a portico of fourteen columns. The portico does not exist anymore, erased by the bombardment.

According to Jashemski, the peristyle garden was reached by a short flight of steps, at the left west rear of the atrium.
It was enclosed by a portico on the south, east and north, supported by columns.

The atrium can be seen through the doorway, with the tablinum on its north side, straight ahead from atrium.
On the east side of the tablinum, would have been a triclinium, on the right of the tablinum.
